Vocational education and training

Joint Universities Centre for Education and Training in General Practice

Our vision is to provide high quality education for general practice vocational training that enhances and complements registrars’ prior and in-practice learning, assisting and inspiring them to continually strive to improve their provision of general practice care - individually, collectively as a profession, and as a part of health care teams.

The Joint Universities Centre was established in 2003 as a co-operative venture between the Departments of General Practice at Melbourne and Monash Universities. The Joint Universities Centre is contracted to provide a broad ranging educational program to registrars enrolled in the Australian General Practice Training Program through the Victorian Metropolitan Alliance. Activities include fortnightly small group workshops, quarterly weekend seminars, online learning and in-practice feedback sessions. The Joint Universities Centre also provides educational activities to fully qualified GPs and those seeking to expand their skills, including researching medical education and training. Its co-directors are Associate Professor Stephen Trumble (The University of Melbourne) and Associate Professor Neil Spike (Monash University).

The aims of the Joint Universities Centre are:

  • To improve health outcomes for patients by delivering to the community a high quality workforce, as recognised by attainment of Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
  • To foster in registrars a passionate approach to practice that encompasses reflective, self-motivated, life-long learning, along with an intellectual curiosity and a solid conceptual understanding of their discipline within the health care system and their vital role as competent and caring healers in the community.
  • To prepare registrars to actively contribute to the continual evolution of the discipline of general practice and the broader provision of health care in a dynamic, demanding and diverse socio-political environment.
  • To provide positive and enthusiastic role models who reflect the breadth of general practice as a medical specialty, and through whom registrars experience a learner-centred community of practice which embodies the principles of respect, support, caring and a whole-person approach.
  • To use the contractual obligations of the program as a springboard in continually striving for excellence in education delivery, development and innovation.
