Masters

The Master of Medicine (Research) and Master of Primary Health Care (Research) enables students to undertake a major research project on a primary health care topic of their choice. When students have completed their research, they should have developed competency in the conduct of research methodologies in the primary health care setting. Masters students will produce a 30,000 word thesis that is examined externally.

Duration

The duration of candidature is one year full-time and two years part-time.

Entry requirements

Master of Medicine (Research)

Entry to the Master of Medicine (Research) is open to medical graduates who hold the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (or equivalent). Exemption from the first year may be granted to candidates who hold an approved postgraduate or fellowship (eg FRACGP) qualification, or have current registration status supported by a certificate of good standing from the appropriate medical registration board.

Master of Primary Health Care (Research)

The Master of Primary Health Care (Research) is open to graduates with an Honours degree or a postgraduate diploma in a related field, or a degree in a related field, plus at least two years of documented relevant professional or work experience.

Fees and scholarships

Local students

The Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth-funded places to Australian residents and New Zealand citizens in a Higher Degree Research (HDR) with an 'entitlement' to a HECS exemption for the duration of an accredited HDR course. For masters students this entitlement is for a maximum period of two years' full-time equivalent study. Step 1:

Ensure that you meet the entry requirements.

Step 2:

Investigate the Department’s current research areas and a potential supervisor for your project.

Research areas
There are three major research areas in the Department’s Primary Care Research Unit (PCRU). The current research areas are chronic disease, mental health and youth health.

Potential supervisors
A number of experienced academics are available to supervise your masters research. Please refer to the list of supervisors and their areas of research and contact them to see if they are able to supervise your proposed topic before you submit a pre-application form.

Step 3: Submit a an expression of interest form

The RHD expression of interest form will be used to establish your eligibility for entry as a Masters student and whether the Department can provide appropriate supervision and facilities to support your research. Please note that submission of this form does not guarantee that you will be offered a place in the Masters program.

Step 4: Submit a formal application form

If the Department is able to provide appropriate supervision and facilities to support your research you will be asked to submit a formal masters application to The University of Melbourne. Please be aware that this application process does not guarantee that you will be offered a place in the masters program.
