Semester 12

Semester 12 is a pre-internship rotation for students at the final stage of their undergraduate training. This subject involves 3 rotational placements – in Medicine, Surgery and General Practice. Each of these rotations involves a 5-week placement within Victoria.

These final year students have learned consulting skills from first year, and will be in their last few weeks of undergraduate training, bringing skills in interviewing, examination, diagnosis and management. They will be motivated to develop skills in preparation for their intern year. Students will be a part of the practice team and be expected to contribute from their first week.

What is the structure of the General Practice rotation?

Students will be allocated to one urban or rural general practice for 5 weeks and will attend tutorials in the region on three Fridays. The students are expected to attend five days a week and also to have some experience of weekend work.

What will the students be doing?

Learning will occur predominantly in the practice, through:

  • Interviewing and examining patients on a daily basis.
  • Providing health care information to patients with supervision.
  • Attending home visits or hospital visits with practice staff including GPs, GP registrars, practice nurses/allied health professionals.
  • Contributing to Enhanced Primary Care items such as care planning, and health assessments.
  • Contributing to the practice and community.
  • Searching for evidence to assist in patient management.
