professional history
My main area of research is in the sociology of mental health and illness, focusing on research on depression. I have conducted extensive research on lay concepts of depression with migrant communities, including Ethiopian, Sudanese, Somali, and more recently Vietnamese and East Timorese. With Professor Lenore Manderson (Monash University) I conducted research on chronic illness and depression in migrant communities in Victoria. My current research is part of a large multidisciplinary study exploring depression in primary care across Victoria. Prior to joining the Department in October 2005, I worked at the Centre for International Mental Health, The University of Melbourne in cross-cultural mental health related research.
