Professor Doris Young is Professor and Chair of General Practice, and Associate Dean (Academic), Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She is involved in educating and training students and health professionals in general practice and primary care research. She currently leads the chronic disease research group (diabetes) in the Primary Care Research Unit located in the Department. She continues to work as a part time GP in a community health centre in Broadmeadows serving a multicultural, diverse and disadvantaged community. |

Professor Doris Young joined the University of Melbourne as a lecturer in 1984 after completing her Fellowship in Adolescent Medicine in Seattle USA in 1982. She worked as a primary care adolescent medicine physician at the Royal Children's Hospital for 3 years before joining the University of Melbourne. She was heavily involved in undergraduate medical education as lecturer and then senior lecturer for the first decade of her academic career and then completed her MD part time in 1998 while heading the GP Unit as Associate Professor.
In 1997, she was appointed to the Foundation Chair of General Practice at the University of Melbourne and Head of Department of General Practice and Public Health in 1999. In 2001, she became Head of the Department of General Practice. Professor Young was involved in the establishment, support and evaluation of the Divisions of GP in Australia for over a decade and Chair the RACGP research committee for 3 years. In 2005 - 2008, she was appointed Associate Dean, Equity and Staff Development in the Faculty of MDHS.
In 2009, she stepped down as Head of Department and took up half time position as Associate Dean (Academic) within the Faculty and half time in the Department engaged in teaching and research activities. |
